...A 100 year old fishing boat forms the centerpiece for a jumble of ship models, marine artifacts and miscellaneous treasures from the bottom of the sea. Ship boards hang askew above an overflowing shelf of nautical reference books. Paintings in various states of completion lean everywhere. It looks like the dwelling of a man obsessed with the sea in every detail, and it is.

...As a young boy Yves grew up within hailing distance of the huge freighters that sailed the St. Lawrence and this more than anything started his obsession with maritime life. In later years he went off to sea to work on those very same ships and during this time he studied, sketched and painted, always refining his skills. His paintings now appear in film documentaries and on book covers and are displayed in numerous museums and international collections. His art commissions come from anywhere on the globe.

...Yves’ reputation is based on his passion for physical and historical accuracy and can be seen in such marine art paintings as the Empress of Ireland moments before her doomed collision. A close look reveals lights on in the galley on the lower deck. "It’s three in the morning," explains Yves, "and they’re baking fresh bread for tomorrow’s breakfast. That’s why those lights are on." This painstaking attention to detail hasn’t gone unnoticed as the number of collectors of his marine art is ever increasing. Nor has the exclusive Canadian Society of Marine Artists missed his eye for detail, proudly listing him as one of their few members.

...The Marine Art Gallery of the Atlantic is located just outside the downtown area of Lunenburg Nova Scotia on the road to Bluerocks, a small scenic fishing village still in use today.
...Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the gallery exclusively features the marine art and nautical oil paintings of owner Yves Berube. Inside you will find many original works of art in oils and acrylics, smaller seaside sketches and fine art prints all diplayed among a sampling of the artist’s vast collection of nautical artifacts.

...These artifacts include ship models such as the largest model of the Bluenose in North America at seven feet long (which has actually salied twice), sets of dishes from the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth, the Mauritania, the Empress of Ireland, the Bremen and the Aquatania. Also, there are early French coins destined for Fort Louisburg N.S., a block from Amundsen’s ship the Maud, a rescued bell from a US naval ship destroyed in the Halifax explosion of 1917, a huge six foot diameter wooden wheel from the C.N. Marine ship the Bonavista, numerous brass telegraphs as well as many, many other artifacts including liferings, ship boards, octants, compasses, ship’s logs and name plates.

...If Yves hasn’t go it on display, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have it. Both his garage and basement are full of further treasures including thousands of nautical books and enough artifacts to fill a museum, which may happen yet if Yves has his way.

...The gallery is a must see the next time you visit the south shore of Nova Scotia. Lunenburg is located an hour west of Halifax on the "Lighthouse Route", a meandering visit through tiny seaside towns and quaint fishing villages.
